Oliver Hardy, Stan Laurel, Sheila Ryan, Dick Nelson, Edmund MacDonald, …
R82 Discovery Miles 820 Ships in 10 - 20 working days

This box set contains three classic movies of the legendary comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. 'In Great Guns' (1941), Stan and Ollie play a butler and chauffeur of wealthy young Dan Forrester (Dick Nelson). Tired of being pampered and coddled by his overprotective aunts, Dan is delighted when he is drafted into the Army. Stan and Ollie also don uniform and accompany Dan to US Cavalry training camp to make certain that no harm will befall their 'delicate' master. While the boys get mixed up in one disaster after another-at one point, Dan pursues a romance with photo-shop proprietor Ginger Hammond. Convinced that Ginger is a gold-digger, Stan and Ollie try to break up the romance, to no avail. 'Jitterbugs' (1943) is considered the best of the Laurel and Hardy projects filmed at Twentieth Century Fox. Stan and Ollie are stars of the Zoot Suit Band, who form an unlikely partnership with a genial con man (Bob Bailey) who allegedly can turn water into gasoline with an invented pill. When the trio joins a carnival, they meet Susan, a naive young singer (Vivian Blaine), whose mother has been swindled by fraudsters. Suddenly gallant, the three organise a sting operation, with Stan disguised as a wealthy elderly lady and Ollie as a rich Texan and aim to get the woman's money back. Although things don't go as planned, the inimitable comedy duo provides nonstop laughs from start to finish. In 'The Big Noise' 1944) Stan and Ollie play janitors of a detective agency who pose as super-sleuths and are hired to protect inventor Alva P. Hartley (Arthur Space). They move to his house which is loaded with crazy contraptions which entrap, baffle and bamboozle the protectors. Meanwhile Hartley's next door neighbors Charlton (Frank Fenton), Hartman (James Bush), Dutchy (Phil Van Zandt) and Mayme (Veda Ann Borg) reveal themselves as the biggest threat of all, a gang of crooks determined to get their hands on the inventor's deadly creation, a super-bomb called 'The Big Noise'. Stan and Ollie escape with the bomb to the War Department in Washington, D.C. just one step ahead of the criminals. Through a series of crazy misadventures, the heroic duo end up in a remote-controlled airplane, along with the bomb, and head straight for trouble.

Art & Language International - Conceptual Art between Art Worlds (Paperback): Robert Bailey Art & Language International - Conceptual Art between Art Worlds (Paperback)
Robert Bailey
R670 Discovery Miles 6 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Art & Language International Robert Bailey reconstructs the history of the conceptual art collective Art & Language, situating it in a geographical context to rethink its implications for the broader histories of contemporary art. Focusing on its international collaborations with dozens of artists and critics in and outside the collective between 1969 and 1977, Bailey positions Art & Language at the center of a historical shift from Euro-American modernism to a global contemporary art. He documents the collective's growth and reach, from transatlantic discussions on the nature of conceptual art and the establishment of distinct working groups in New York and England to the collective's later work in Australia, New Zealand, and Yugoslavia. Bailey also details its publications, associations with political organizations, and the internal power struggles that precipitated its breakdown. Analyzing a wide range of artworks, texts, music, and films, he reveals how Art & Language navigated between art worlds to shape the international profile of conceptual art. Above all, Bailey underscores how the group's rigorous and interdisciplinary work provides a gateway to understanding how conceptual art operates as a mode of thinking that exceeds the visual to shape the philosophical, historical, and political.

This new title covers the extensive cruising area of Galicia in the north west of Spain from Ribadeo to Bayona, where the beautiful rias provide shelter from the Atlantic in picturesque harbours and remote anchorages. The authors have spent several seasons cruising in the area and making use of their local connections have produced a modern guide that provides in-depth information necessary for yachts spending time visiting the rias and ports of Galicia. Annotated town plans covering over 90 destinations show shore-side facilities and recommended restaurants and side panels provide advice on interesting places to visit, local customs and features of interest. Carlos Rojas has sailed yachts since 2000, a short but intensive career during which he has crossed the Atlantic, cruised in the Pacific, made several passages across Biscay and sailed to Ireland and France. His professional involvement in technology companies as an engineer, manager and director has given him an insight into design and usability that he applies to his pilot books. Carlos has lived most of his life in Britain but he is originally from Spain, a country that he knows well, naming Galicia as one of his favourite areas. Robert Bailey was brought up in a sailing family. Over a period of 35 years, and with the aid of a Nicholson 32 and Rustler 36, much of the coastline of the north western approaches to Europe, from the Faroe Islands in the north to the Morbihan in the south, were avidly explored. In 2001 he adopted a more flexible approach to his career as an aerospace engineer and this allowed him to take up cruising instruction. He is now a Yachtmaster Instructor.

He inspires his entire generation of Mexican Americans to straighten their backs, lift their heads and see new possibilities they were emboldened to pursue. Achievements were attained that have been dismissed by the Black/White Paradigm; hence, comparative analysis between Mexican American and African American civil rights history has been explored and conclusions presented. His military and civil rights legacy is relevant to today's hottest issue, immigration reform.
